Review of The BFG (2016) by James R — 19 Dec 2016

Solid family movie here. It's kinda sad not a lot of people went to see this one because past the weird premise of the film it has a very heart warming story to it. The BFG is about a young orphan girl named Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) who is always lonely.

One night while up super late she spots the BFG (Mark Rylance) a giant that scores the streets of London giving people dreams. He sorta kinda kidnaps Sophie and brings him back to Giant Country. He explains to her he doesn't eat humans, but the other giants led by the cruel Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) eat humans and also pick on BFG because of his relatively small size.

Eventually Sophie learns more about the BFG and becomes quick friends, but it's apparent something must be done about the other giants. It's a sweet story about friendship in unlikely places and also how not to judge someone by their appearance.

It's heart warming and has a ton of fantastic visuals in the film. I watched this with my nieces and all of us enjoyed it. I will say the last 20 minutes of the film do get a bit too silly, but it doesn't detract from the overall message.

Definitely, give this one a look for during the holidays if you're looking for a good family film.
