Review of The BFG (2016) by Bradley J — 04 Jul 2016
Don't give up on The BFG after the first twenty or so minutes which prove oddly flat, awkward and lacking in energy. After this strange lull, the film slowly wraps its arms around you in its warm embrace.
Old-fashioned in the best sense, Steven Spielberg has fashioned the kind of non-rushed, charming and occasionally magical film, one would have shoved raves at in the 80s. It feels like a trip to a simpler time.
And that's the biggest strength of the film. It's simple. It's a pleasant stroll through a gorgeous land with good company and only mild spikes of peril. And when the giant and Sophie (wonderfully performed by Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill) arrive at the Queens palace, you darn near wanna hug the movie.
It's not a film for kids used to the hyperactive stylings of an Ice Age or many of Dreamworks pictures, but for those willing to jump into this world, it can be transporting. Rating: 82.
