Review of The BFG (2016) by Mmadnessgames — 01 Jun 2017
I read the book as a kid, so I'm biased. I admit that.
But, this isn't a case of "the book is always better".

Beyond the special effects, there isn't much for a fan of the book to like... and, honestly: the special effects don't add to the movie; the film-makers appear distracted by technology.
The core of the film isn't right... Most significantly, perhaps, is the fact that the titular character of the BFG isn't the same as he was in the books.
I only watched about twenty minutes of this film but that was enough to realize that Spielberg and Friends changed the tone of the source material for dramatic effect.
The BFG is much scarier than I remember him.
(He's not the sweet, gentle giant from the book.).
I hesitate to say this, but: I don't like the special effects either... I mean, I can see that what they've done is impressive. It's a technological accomplishment. But, it looks weird.
The BFG looks like an animated character with a human face mapped on him. The nose is bigger than it should be, and the ears are enlarged, but he's still too human looking.
The CGI movements are off, too...
It reminded me, numerous times, of Ang Lee's Hulk.
I liked Spielberg's Tintin movie a lot more than this...
And, I don't like the source material at all.
If I hadn't read the book as a kid, maybe I wouldn't have disliked this so much...
There was so much magic in that book.
Yet, very little of it made it's way to the screen.
