Review of The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) by Nate J — 04 Jul 2013
This is film 37 in my list of top 100 movies of all time. As I started watching, I realised very early on that I didn't know a single actor. That being said, Harold Russell restores any faith lost that film is not about stunts, massive action sequences and big cast names.
This guy fought in the war, lost both hands and landed a role with a backstory of exactly the same. But this is his first acting job, and there weren't many that followed either, but he is the one character who stands out as compelling.
His story arc as Homer is truly inspiring and the whole film was spent with me rooting him on. The rest of the cast are very good at what they do, but for me Russell stands out as a superstar. Great film, great story.
