(1946) The Best Years Of Our Lives.
DRAMA.
They'll be no synopsis except to call this film a DRAMA about return war veterans once coming back to their normal lives again. In this case the story revolves around three returned WWII war veterans Al(Frederic March), Fred (Dana Andrews) and an actual war veteran Homer, played by the excellent Harold Russell who lost both his arms in actual combat and how they intermingle and adjust after serving there country. This is not a film about one story but 5 different stories that even upon watching the first 10 to fifteen minutes into the film can be made into a film in itself.
If I were to be asked what is to be one of my all time favorite films would be, this film would definitely be on the top of my list. Upon seeing this film for the first time I could not believe the many issues this film deals with such as acceptance, anti-semitism, the human psyche, alcohalism and job secuity all that are still relevant in times such as today. I was always curious why this film did so well at the Oscars, but after seeing this film, I now understand why this film must win.
I have no idea after reading some reviews from respected film critics are calling this film a well made SOAP OPERA when to me it's more of a social commentary about our government, and the issues war veterans must face upon coming back home, from a war that can ruin any normal human being.
This is also Fredric March second Oscar win, the first being Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. And a honory Oscar went to Harold Russell and deservedly so.
4/4 Absolute masterpiece.
