Review of The Benchwarmers (2006) by Steve A — 05 Jun 2012
I am a sucker for Adam Sandler's bizarre sense of humor. The jokes in all of his films can be extremely repetitive, imature, and just plain stupid. However, for some odd reason it gets to me. That is partially why I enjoyed some of his other movies like Big Daddy and (yeah yeah) Grown Ups. I know that Sandler didn't write The Benchwarmers but Adam Sandler's childhood friend, Allen Covert and Nick Swardson were the ones who wrote this, and it seems like them and Adam Sandler have the same sense of humor. With that said, I seem to only find these jokes funny when it is actually Adam Sandler on screen doing his improv with his pals, like Rob Schneider and David Spade. Without Sandler in the bunch it doesn't work.
I found a lot of aspects of this movie to be very enjoyable, and sometimes even fairly funny. All the scenes of these guys playing baseball is very entertaining. The whole Star Wars thing, very creative. But what I really hated was the lazy script. The cheesy "wrap up" ending was awful, about 50% of the dialouge is cringeworthy, and I can't stand Swardson as an actor!
