Review of The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) by Rikki C — 29 May 2008
Very disappointing sequel to Going My Way. If Going My Way was "Hollywood 'feel good' movie making at its finest", then The Bells of St. Mary's is just "movie making" -- a pale imitator that is way too long and not terribly enjoyable.
Bing Crosby reprises his Oscar-winning role as Father O'Malley who, this time, is assigned to a troubled parish with an elementary school run by Ingrid Bergmann. As a fan of both actors, I was looking forward to the film; unfortunately, almost every storyline and hard-luck relationship feels very forced and uninteresting.
Even the musical numbers can't perk up this sequel -- though it is tough to follow a movie that gave the world the #1 pop standard "Swinging on a Star". Not recommended.
