Review of The Believer (2001) by David Ray G — 28 May 2010
I've been trying to find and watch this film for quite a while, and now that I've seen it I'm actually quite disappointed and inclined to say it's a very over-rated film.
Movies about Nazis have come and gone and come and gone again. But this had a very original idea but it was badly executed. The dialog and concepts were quite intriguing, as was Ryan Gosling's performance. But the characters are so confusing to follow - especially the one of Gosling. Was he a real Nazi? Was he a self-loathing confused guy? Or was he a very bright man who by supporting the opposite side make his own shine?
I also found the ending quite stupid. And added that to the movie's overall inconsistency and disruptive cohesion, it's ultimately, not a great movie.
