I've always loved the original movie so I knew going in I would probably be somewhat disappointed. It's a fact that Nichole Kidman can not compare to Geraldine Page. But Colin Farrell does come close to Clint Eastwood's performance.

But it's difficult to top a classic and the original is a classic. Of course knowing the ending does take some away from the story. Sophia Coppola does a fine job with the material. But she really needs to visit Virginia.

The Spanish Moss blowing from the trees in every outside scene might work if the movie was set in Savannah or in New Orleans, but it is not Virginia. Still it's atmospheric and haunting as the story requires.

Not bad but not great.
