Review of The Beguiled (2017) by Alexander G — 02 Jul 2017
Directed by Sofia Coppola and based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Cullinan. This is the second big screen adaptation, the first being the 1971 version featuring Clint Eastwood. Having never seen the original or read the book, the main reason this movie hit my radar is Sofia Coppola being a fan of her other films 'Lost in Translation' and 'The Virgin Suicides'.
The setting is Virginia in 1864 at a girls school run by Nicole Kidman that has remained hidden from the raging Civil War until a, Colin Farrell, a union soldier is discovered wounded near by and taken into their school.
It's a fairly simple story of these women being confronted with the enemy in their home with a slow burn to an expected twist. The story and characters do not necessarily make this a noteworthy film as is the direction and cinematography, with each scene expertly planned and shot.
It is a stride for women behind the lens, on the page and performance as Coppola turns what would be a fantasy of most men being alone in a house with several women and twists it putting full control in the hands of the women.
