Review of The Beguiled (1971) by Sv G — 18 Sep 2007
Not the typical Eastwood and NOT the typical Civil War story. A Union Soldier stumbles wounded into a Southern school for girls. Then things get hot - and weird. Edgar Allen Poe meets Tennessee Williams is how this was billed when it came out 36 years ago.
SO hard to believe as this would raise more than an eyebrow even today. First half hour is fairly innocent - and then it gets ...twisted..and more so until the bitter end. I loved it - would love to own this one because it is so unique of all else he has ever done.
..especially for his early 70s movies - this one was wayyyyyy out there. Far more so than Play Misty for Me which came a few years later - loved that one too - but this one? Not like any other.
