Review of The Beaver (2011) by Hani H — 09 Sep 2011
There is a lot to love here. The beginning is incredible and flows beautifully. Moments are charming and shine through with real heart. What is interesting is that the "Beaver" character feels much less important than the story with his son.
How his son deals with his father and his high school situation is far more interesting and better executed. Cliches and "moments that would only happen in a movie" do appear, but not often.
I almost wish the entire film was from the son's story. The end is by far the film's biggest failure. Things jump to such an extreme unprepared state that it is hard to say whether an important scene was cut or they just ran out of time.
Having the girl jump from hating to loving him was out of nowhere. We needed a moment alone with her to see this transformation in her mind. The same should be said for the final speech moment. It is drastic and way too quick.
Absurd even. Never would happen in real life. The beginning sets the stage for a great film and then it tumbles into cliches that were not built up to enough to be seen as realistic.
