Review of The Beaver (2011) by Jim B — 04 Nov 2011
This is a very meaningful, even painful, movie; at certain points it touches dizzyingly ambitious high notes, and hits you right in your emotions without having to use any tricks to do so. If I was going to compare it, I would say possibly Donnie Darko or something like that.
For instance there is this beaver, and it goes from funny and happy to suddenly somewhat sinister and scary; meanwhile the two teenagers in the story find their wounded lives intersecting with so much raw love and potential, and then it is all just coming to a head and.
.. it is one of those movies that can draw tears to anybody's eyes, and I feel that this was certainly a very heartfelt work by director Jodie Foster. Mel Gibson is obviously deserving of an Oscar nomination for what can only be described as an extremely artistically daring performance, utterly fearless; this guy may be lost but he is reaching so hard for.
.. something. This movie will move you.
