Review of The Beaver (2011) by Tom J — 30 Dec 2011
Ben Affleck received artistic redemption for his risky, but engrossing performance in Hollywoodland. At this point probably nothing could bring Mel Gibson redemption, but the risky The Beaver does show what a fine actor he is.
His performance as Walter Black, a depressed alcoholic who brings himself back from attempted suicide by re-started his life through the puppet beaver he finds in the dumpster, is probably the finest of his career.
The rest of the cast is solid and the directing of Jodie Foster is stately. The movie is a nice combination of humor and tragedy. Like Lars and the Real Girl (another movie I loved), you need to suspend reality that everyone (except his wife and oldest son) except The Beaver as Walter Black's alter ego but if you can The Beaver is a quirky, sometimes moving experience.
