Review of The Beaver (2011) by Anthony M — 21 Mar 2012
Mel Gibson gives close to a tour-de-force performance, but the screenplay has some deep, serious issues. This script admittedly does contain moments of emotional honesty, but it undermines these with some pretty obvious elements of conflict; furthermore, the film plays with some interesting ideas (mental health, the "celebrity" culture that currently exists in the media, etc.
), but they come off as undercooked. And the Yelchin/Lawrence subplot, while well-acted, feels like it belongs in a different movie. That said, Gibson's work is so good, so focused, that the film is worth seeing.
