Review of The Beaver (2011) by William L — 27 Jun 2012
I saw in this flawed movie the image of the all-consuming daimon; . The movie is partially about mental illness, but more it is a retelling of the totem story, like spiderman's "venom" suit or the image of Baba-yaga, the monkey's paw, or even the Ring in Tolkien's works.
The Beaver puppet is more than a means for Black to recover, it is the all-consuming nature of the daimon inside each of us that seems to offer safety, recovery, or salvation but eventually endeavors to devour us - like Stormbringer does to Elric, or like Arcane promises to Matt Cable.
Ultimately, the tragedy of the suffering main character can only end in violence, like the violence Oedipus does to himself, and on the far side of that violence there is the hint of deeper insight and salvation.
Worth seeing.
