Review of The Beaver (2011) by Joss D — 20 Aug 2012
A bizarrely dark, serious look at mental health and depression told through a seemingly whimsical tale. The parallels between Mel Gibson's public persona and the character he portrays are clear and deliberate, so this feels like his attempt at some kind of redemption.
.. but not many are going to buy it. The film is well acted and I did enjoy Anton Yelchin's story, but it ultimately descends into saccharine melodrama and the resolution fails to deal with complexity of the issues it raises.
The tone is highly inconsistent, at times it feels like a French farce but in other places it takes itself completely seriously and feels like a psychological thriller. Still it could have been a lot worse, and it is certainly an interesting film to watch.
6.5/10.
