Review of The Beast Must Die (1974) by Colin F — 05 Aug 2011
This is another one of those films that it is so bad it becomes good. Basically a millionaire hunter played fabulously OTT by Calvin Lockheart invites guests round to his isolated mansion in the country as he suspects one of them of being a Werewolf and wants to hunt it. Que the line The Beast Must Die!! In a poor attempt of audience participation there is a werewolf break in the middle of the film, where you are given 30 seconds to guess which guest is the Werewolf, its just pure Cheese!
Whats makes the film is Calvin Lockheart as the lead his dialog is unbelievable, even in 1974 you start to think are they actually taking the p*ss! The funniest scene is where hes asking the guests to put silver bullets in their mouths to see if they are a Werewolf, its just so over the top. The major negative of this film is the actual Werewolf itself, in the whole of screen history this is the worst ever Werewolf! It is just basically a dog dressed up in a fur coat, it really have to be seen to be believed it is so bad. Peter Cushing is also well below par with his dodgy foreign accent and there is even a hip Michael Gamdon in a film he would probably rather forgot. The final line is, IS THERE NO CURE, no their isnâ(TM)t it is 91mins of your life you wont get back. Good for laugh and probably only deserves one star but for Lockhearts performance alone it will get a 3.
