Just because it started the subgenre does not mean that it is a great film. The story struggled over whether to focus on the dinosaur (which it did not, obviously for budget reasons) or the personal drama (which was shallow and evoked no reaction from the viewer).
And this is even taking into account the genre of film is (one that I often enjoy).
