Review of The Beach (2000) by Charles H — 11 Jan 2010
The Beach. One of the things I know about this film before I watch it is the song 'Pure Shores' by All Saints. 'The Beach' is about a paradise, and at what length will you go to keep that paradise. That said paradise is located on one of the islands in Thailand, and it is supposedly Thailand's best kept secret, or to most people, an urban myth. Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) and two other tourists arrived at the island, to find Thai guards with AK-47 on one side, and a colony of tourists on another.
The scenes are shot beautifully. It's like watching a travel documentary of some sort. The first half of the film was alright, but to me, the second half just went downhill. The concept is intriguing. A world without outside interferences. Your own paradise, living with people with the same mentality. But there are scenes that to me, are just redundant. Danny Boyle might be a director with a reputation. But this one just isn't one of his best.
