Review of The Beach (2000) by Miss Chanandler B — 26 Sep 2011
Positive.
Usually the Boyle films are either about the visual aspect or the dialogue. For example A Life Less Ordinary would still be a great film to watch even with the volume turned down whereas Shallow Grave is all about the brilliant language. The Beach however has a bit of both. DiCaprio's narration is the hilight of the dialogue. It's butufully written and DiCaprios voice gives it what it needs. The stunning shots of the beach give it the visual aspect. DiCaprio and Paterson Joseph were the hilights of the actors they both gave very different yet equally brilliant performances. Boyle makes his mark on it aswell. Even though the lead is American Roberet Carlyle reminds us every now and then of just who'd directing this flick. All round decent film.
Negetive:
It was not. By far the best film we've seen from Danny Boyle. It's not as bad as Sunshine but it's still not great. Some of the dialogue, though well written, is still slightly cheesey. There were certain scenes where you felt they were unnessisary or silly (DiCaprio shark attack scene being one of them). Also at the beggining it seems that instead of easing it in the nain plot is just thrusted at you. There is no build up at all and it seems a tad rushed. Towards the very end it seems thaat it is going downhill and it has been dragged out too much but it is only at the very tail end of the film. The last Danny Boyle film I had to see and instead of going out with a bang I seemed to get a fizzle.
"And me, I still believe in paradise. But now at least I know it's not some place you can look for, 'cause it's not where you go. It's how you feel for a moment in your life when you're a part of something, and if you find that moment... it lasts forever... " - Richard.
