Review of The Bay (2012) by Ian G — 26 Jul 2013
Like Chronicle earlier in 2012, the Bay blends or mines another genre that would unexpectedly blend well with the found footage horror genre, in this case the faux eco documentary to great effect. Using a naive and rookie reporter in a small Maryland town as the central narrator of the piece after the fact, the footage is gradually spooled out over the next hour and 25 minutes of a mutated parasite whose home was made at the bottom of this Bay and gradually infests and decimates the towns population over the july the fourth weekend.
Lots of great jumps and chills are found here thanks in large part to my knowledge the first big director jumping into the found footage ring being Barry Levison and garnered a huge following at the 2012 TIFF Midnight madness program.
A true break out hit to say the least from a genre which seems to be rediscovering its sea legs with these two entries.
