Martin McDonagh is the boss and creator, that's not in dispute, but it's Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson who bring his world to life, which is both a metaphor and a sad tale of loneliness and vulnerability. One about a man who wants to be alone and another who can't tolerate being alone.
And it's not an otherworldly and complicated story by any stretch of the imagination, but even for our times and in the era in which the events of this film take place it's clear that men don't talk about their feelings.
McDonagh certainly doesn't choose a simplistic path and tackles a violence that at first may seem like a joke because you wouldn't think Gleeson's character would do it, but when it happens is when the story makes it clear to you that this tragicomedy is intended to be genuinely devastating, and it really is.
You're not supposed to leave here with a smile on your face, but I assure you, you won't leave here without something to think about either.
