Review of The Band's Visit (2007) by Richard S — 02 Aug 2008
Who said minimalism was dead? Certainly not Eran Kolirin, director of "The Band's Visit"- a near effortless middle-eastern fairy tale film. Most of its key ingredients- political idealism, sentimentality, presumably "important" subject matter- are usually enough to keep me away.
Then I learned that the execution is closer to Jarmusch and his Finnish friend Aki. Droll. Never self congratulatory. Quiet, but only when it needs to be. Charming, but never cloying. Not to mention that it's one of the few legitimately fun movies to come out of this region of the world in a while.
This is made to be the sort of foreign film that anyone can enjoy. For once, that's wonderful news.
