Review of The Band's Visit (2007) by Matan S — 17 Nov 2010
This was such a nuanced film, and absolutely gorgeous. Ronit Elkabetz and Sasson Gabai were brilliant in their roles, and their night scene together is one of the finest cinematic moments I've witnessed in a long long time.
The wonderful thing...well, one of many wonderful things...about this film is the caliber of acting it takes when there's no soundtrack, no 3-camera-angles-per-second flash motion, and no cinemagic gimmickry; just straight-forward acting.
There wasn't a missed beat anywhere in this film. Every actress and actor in it was spot on, and Eran Kolirin's direction kept you in that deliciously uncomfortable knife's-edge position between agony and ecstasy, a laugh just THISCLOSE but always almost out of reach.
I love this movie.
