Review of The Band Wagon (1953) by David F — 02 Feb 2008
Bitty backstage musical pairs aging Astaire with starlet Charisse. The screenplay is a mess and the film unravels into little more than a revue over the last 45 minutes. The love story is never convincing and while "Dancing in the Dark" is an amazing set piece, the film's climactic number, the film noir pastiche "Girl Hunt" is an incoherent mishmash.
Minnelli brings his characteristic visual flair to the film but this simply isn't in the same league as"An American in Paris", "Meet Me in St Louis" or "Gigi".
