Review of The Band Wagon (1953) by Rikki C — 28 Nov 2010
It may not be the best musical I have seen nor follow beautifully in the footsteps of "An American in Paris" or "Singin' in the Rain," but "The Band Wagon" does have a number of fine qualities.
The songs are very catchy and memorable, the storyline is interesting, the failed productions are funny, the production which succeeds is good, and the dancing and singing is pretty nice (comparatively, the film is a breath of fresh air towards later musical Best Picture winners Oliver and Gigi which I was not a fan of).
The plot does seem to drift it a little astray but it overly does not mainly effect the film as a whole. The cast actually is well made, with the supporting cast being quite good and the cameo appearance of Ava Gardner certainly caught me off guard.
A relatively good musical, and a finer one from the 1950's.
