Review of The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970) by Steve W — 07 May 2011
Peckinpah's most likeable, yet the least appreciated of his Westerns, "Cable Hogue" is a lot funnier than you would think. It doesn't have the expected bloody shootouts, the violence, and mayhem you would expect from Peckinpah, especially after his last film "The Wild Bunch", but instead a film about loss, rebirth, redemption, love, and death, in a nutshell.
Is Cable Hogue supposed to be some Jesus Christ like figure? There are the parallels, but I'd rather be watching this film than a bible film. This one is much more enjoyable to the end. Plus David Warner as the 'priest'? Naughty stuff going on there.
