Review of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) by Justin C — 27 Nov 2018
Gripe 1: This is a movie showing 6 different episode-like western shorts. What that means is that you have 6 different short western flicks with characters that you never have enough time to get invested to. Gripe 2: The latter 5 episodes are similar to one another in theme (theme being somewhat realistic western grit and an American Literature style endings) whereas the first movie is somewhat funny and not realistic (i.e. the angel singing cowboy floating into heaven while singing a western song). Gripe 3. The first short sets you up for a funny theme, and interesting western music. Its actually fun and enjoyable to watch and you think the remaining movie is going to be like that but it isn't. Gripe 4: some of the episodes are downright boring. The last episodes takes place solely in a stagecoach with characters bickering with one another. What's entertaining about that?
Non-Gripe 1: The scenery is on point and gives off an excellent vibe. The music is also excellent.
That's basically it. I rated this based off the episodes that I like. I only like 1 and 1/2 of the episodes. I also gave it a little more credit just because I like Tim Blake Nelson.
