Review of The Bachelor (1999) by Daniel P — 06 Apr 2008
This is not the kind of film I'd expect to enjoy, and indeed, I basically didn't the first time. This time, however, I undeniably laughed a lot at all the horribly botched proposals and the excellent comic support of Hal Holbrook, who enlivens every scene he's in.
Also great are Peter Ustinov and Edward Asner. Sadly Chris O'Donnell is an apathetic lead, and Renee Zellwegger is hardly better as the love of his life. (O'Donnell is dull, whereas Zellwegger frequently seems drunk.
) Amazingly, that's not enough to sink the film. Perky, often witty, with stronger supporting roles than leads - The Bachelor is undeniably pap, but high-end pap that achieves its simple aims.
