Review of The Babysitters (2008) by Dave S — 23 May 2012
Very thoughtful, very artful exploitation drama. I hope nobody expects to giggle at this or find easy enjoyment in it, as the negative reviews I've read all seem to have that perspective. I think The Babysitters is dealing with some serious things in a very serious way: prostitution, underage sex, deception, independence, doing business.
As a treatise (pro/con) on its seamier themes, the film may fail itself by being over-complicated (if you haven't already ideologized pay-for-sex, you'll be too lost to find art, and if you already have, you'll probably resent the "unnecessary" thoughtfulness); but as a narrative, I think it's extraordinarily delicate and calm.
