Review of The Babysitter (2017) by Daniel S — 09 Dec 2018
A quality I love in films (and need in human beings) is the ability to not take oneself too seriously. This is not a serious film. This is a B Movie. And it revels in that. Title cards, occasional phrases popping up on screen, stock characters.
It's all there and all works. And that follows through to the gore as well. There's gore and there's gore. One is serious. The other is fun. This has super fun, super surprising, spurting blood kind of gore, and it's more often than not the kind of gore you laugh at.
I will say that the 'isn't this hot chick just the coolest' stuff at the beginning goes on too long. You've only got a very narrow window of patience to play with when you're showing how much fun two characters are having, and this overdoes it.
There's a reason most films will do it in a montage. But overall it's a film that won't rock your world, but will put some smiles on your face on a cold, winter's eve. Also, it's got a rite of passage, coming of age, awkward teen boy gets to kiss the girl story rolling through it, and I eat that shit up like cereal.
