Review of The Babadook (2014) by Bradysmith — 05 Jan 2016
This is a good horror movie, one of the few, but it still only shows a small glimpse of the greatness it could have achieved. The performances, sure handed direction, character development, and sense of tension are all well above the average scarefest.
It actually has an idea of what is truly frightening, slowly building menace with very few jump scares, strange noises, and unusual things seen out of the corner of our eye. But the last act is fatally flawed, giving in to clichés such as people being flung around a house by an invisible monster and loud screechy music slathered on top of annoying yelling.
This greatly diminishes what was for most of its running time a surprisingly creepy movie. The ending also makes very little sense no matter how you look at it. Still, it's definitely worth a look if you're searching for a few chills.
