Review of The Babadook (2014) by Natalie M — 07 Jun 2015
Ok, first of all I had really high hopes for this film because most reviews said it was good, it had a high rating on here and all my friends had said it was a good movie. Now, usually I don't pay attention to other peoples of opinions of movies because I like to make my own decision uninfluenced by other people but as this is a horror movie, I took note because, lets face it, there has been a very limited amount of good horror movies since the 90s.
As you can tell by my rating I should have not paid attention to the rest of the ratings. About five minutes into this movie I was hoping that The Babadook would get that annoying little shit of a kid, and then after 20 minutes I was hoping that his mum would die too.
This is what set me off the movie in the first place. Horror movies, in my eyes anyway, are only good if you want the main character the live. You watch the movies and you identify with the main characters and you strive for them to beat the bad guy.
This movie did the exact opposite. Both the annoying little screaming kid and his mum did nothing to persuade me that they should defeat the Babadook. I know that the Babadook was supposed to have possessed their lives which is what made them weird but this is no excuse for the kids annoying behaviour right from the beginning of the movie.
When she killed the dog that was it, I wanted to be the one to kill them myself. What this movie needed was more time from the Babadook and less time with the kid screaming in the back of the car. All the way through I was waiting for the film to get started and it just never seemed to happen and then the credits were rolling.
I expected to be scared from this film and all I got was hatred for a small child and a couple of pranks to play on my sister. Overall very disappointing. In my personal opinion we need to get out of this phase of possession and paranormal movies and move back to the golden age of the slasher.
