This was a very depressing movie. The story was phenomenal and the movie did so well at standing out as a modern horror movie. There was so much tension and buildup that made the scares ten times more effective.
For a modern horror movie with no jumpscares, this movie was actually scary in the psychological horror category. With good acting and a magnificent story, The Babadook is the best horror movie that I've seen from this decade so far.
