Review of The Babadook (2014) by Laurie S — 22 Apr 2017
Wow. This movie hit a little too close to home, I identified with the mom so much. My husband didn't die - he left me, with a 2 year old and a baby and the hell I went through, especially during those long nights when all I wanted to do was sleep, can definitely bring out the dark demons. I am further impressed that the film took it even further, suggesting that even when we recognize the destruction and its cause, we can't always rid ourselves of the monster, but instead we choose to make peace with it, in whatever way we can. Excellent movie. The Aussies really know how to do twisted, eerie and bleak! (Oh, and the whole sub-plot about how the mom struggles to love her son, even though in some twisted way she blames him for the loss of her husband. That was well done. Someone really "went there" and dug deep.
Oh, and if you're just looking for a good horror flick, it's still good. I am a huge horror junkie and hardly anything scares me anymore, but this was pretty scary and well done. Despite the silly name, the Babadook is heck-o-creepy!
Still don't understand where he book came from. But it's a necessary piece of the story. Anyone?
