Review of The Babadook (2014) by Jack W — 17 May 2017
Too bad mainstream horror doesn't learn their craft from films like this. Clearly made by filmmakers who love their craft. Beautifully shot & very well acted. A lot of time is spent getting to know the main characters, all of whom are very well acted.
The child is great and all performs look like real normal people. It does have its flaws though. First, it could use a few more genuine scares; it's great at being creepy more than scary. Second, sone scene just don't fit or serve any purpose.
For example, in the height of one the tense ending scenes, the mother answers the doorbell & chats with the old lady next door. Also, the child builds crazy weapons to protect himself, but little time is spent on this side of him; we just know he does it.
Adds nothing to the story. Third, it never really explains what/who/why Babadook is. You're left wondering if it is a ghost? Does it need a living host? What's the backstory on the book? The best parts are when you aren't sure if Babadook is real or if the mother is loosing it.
Regardless, I'm sure this will get remade by a big name company & they will fill it with sexy bimbos and jocks who will hatchet to death this craftily done film.
