Review of The Babadook (2014) by Andj C — 06 May 2015
This is one of the most original and heartfelt horror genre movies I've seen in a long time. It not only uses traditional horror jump style scares (paired with genuine dread if you are an animal or child lover) but really probes much deeper into the meaning of love, family, and parenthood.
I don't have children, in fact, I am a long term child avoid-er, but this story made me put myself in the place of the leading woman, and that is exceptionally rare and hard to do. If you're looking for an original, engaging, and truly scary film this one is for keeps! I watched it in the middle of the day, and boy I'm glad I did! It also prompted me to call my sister and listen to her prattle on about her life.
Do yourself a favor and watch this. We would all be so lucky to see female driven, smart movies like this made more often.
