Review of The Babadook (2014) by Kayla K — 14 Aug 2015
The film is very original, even if the synopsis proves not to be. I was very disturbed throughout the film and could never feel comfortable, even in the moments where some people should. The film wasn't exactly terrifying, but was abnormal and made me feel odd through the entire film.
The visuals were fantastic. Sound work was great, too. The acting was one of the most disturbing parts of the film. Seeing the mother and her son evolve dramatically throughout the film was utterly creepy and I never felt safe.
Some of the scenes were unexpected even if they should have been expected due to the various hints the movie gives earlier on. There weren't many jump scares, the film relies heavily on suspense and emotional build-up to the point where you're glued to the screen and can't stop watching.
Sadly, the ending wasn't my cup of tea (it felt too happy and was just odd considering the rest of the movie was so dark and twisted) and the events leading up to the ultimate ending were very drawn out and excessive, and ultimately made no sense at all.
If you just want a fun and suspenseful film to watch with your friends, this movie is a viable option, just don't expect anything too intelligent, even if the film tries to be.
