Review of The Babadook (2014) by Joseph O — 29 Sep 2017
It really wasn't the kind of horror film I expected it to be, and I say that as one of the highest intended compliments. The Babadook was everything a horror movie should be, unsettling, creepy, intensifying, up to the viewer's interpretation.
It really reminded me as a cross between Sinister and Secret Window, two movies somewhat similar to this one, except this movie really slowed down to show how the mother (fantastically performed by Essie Davis) was slowly driven to insanity while trying to raise her problematic child.
I could go on and on about how perfect the suspense and cinematography was, but to focus on the negatives, it did get a little ridiculous and choppy, pacing-wise, towards the last 20 minutes of the movie.
