Not quite as bad as the critics made out, but it is something of a mis-step. The kitsch 60's references are clearly out of pace with the rest of the film, although there is no denying that Fiennes and Thurman certainly looked the part (if not overly convincing in ther portrayals).
This could have better been served by a more adult approach, where its idiosyncracies could be more in-keeping and playful.
