Review of The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004) by Drew H — 30 Dec 2007
"Slavery never really ended in this country. It just gave it another name. Employee. " - Sam Bicke.
'The Assassination of Richard Nixon' is the interesting yet grim and depressing true tale set in the early 70s about a perfect nobody, Sam Bicke (Oscar Winner Sean Penn) who works as a salesman at a rundown furniture store, and whose wife (Naomi Watts) left him and hardly ever lets him see his kids. After being denied for a loan to start a business with his buddy (Don Cheadle), Sam goes off the deep end and puts together a plot to assassinate President Nixon, someone who Sam believes is the root of all these lies. It's a dark and depressing tale, incredibly acted (especially from Penn), but the writing and story really fade in and out. It's confusing and not very entertaining, but I recommend based solely on the fact of the impressive performances. Mykelti Williamson, Michael Wincott and Jack Thompson (in a very fine performance as Bicke's seedy boss) are also in the film. 'The Assassination of Richard Nixon' turned out to be something totally different than I expected it to be. Grade: B-.
