Review of The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004) by Zack B — 10 Mar 2011
Stories like these are perfect for independent filmmakers because stories like these are all about the minutiae of the every day life of a man slowly descending into complete madness, not insanity, but complete madness.
At first I thought this was going to be a little indie movie that would try to be original and powerful but while doing so would become tedious and uninteresting. My judgment was wrong. I found this film to be very interesting, mainly because Sean Penn pulls the movie through with his captivating performance. If you have no interest in the story at all, at least watch the movie for Sean Penn's performance. He creates a character so real, so full of pain and a desire for a better life. A man wounded by years and years of what he observes to be oppression by superiors. He is not going to take it anymore. Sean Penn is a perfect casting choice because he can easily show us that slow descent into madness while at the same time keeping us interested and somewhat empathetic. The movie as a whole is filled with good performances and has a way of making the life of the character thrilling.
