This character study of one of life's losers is awfully depressing, but well worth the effort as an alternative to Hollywood's product and for another of Sean Penn's remarkable performances.
Niels Mueller, who penned the underappreciated Tadpole (2002) makes his directorial debut. I hope to see a lot more from him.
