Review of The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004) by Eric B — 22 Jun 2009
Sean Penn is phenomenal in portraying this paradoxical and complex role. A startling performance that penetrates straight to your heart. The desperation, overwhelming sadness, collapsing pain and paralysing agony which his character experiences, holding himself together with but a thread whilst the rage and frustration resulted from too pure (and too stubborn) a view on integrity and righteousness burns inside, and eventually drives him into what can never be undone.
Perhaps it is exactly what he wants, whether it is justifiable or not is nevertheless another story. The talent and success of Sean Penn as an actor is his incredible ability to empathise, and at the same time convey that empathy to the audience.
