Review of The Assassin (2015) by Mark M — 29 Oct 2015
The problem with the film is neither the festival-friendly painfully slow pace nor the admittedly nice (though far from luscious) cinematography, but the complete lack of a coherent sequence that would tie things together.
Many scenes start & finish out of nowhere with no real connection to anything else. The dialogue is close to non-existent. Characters appear with no introduction or reference point. The (slow) pace creates the illusion of depth (in its self-importance) but the characters hardly skim the surface.
Overall this would be nice as a Nature Channel episode but is torturous as a movie. Not surprisingly 30% of the audience left the theater before the first hour was over.
