Hou appropiates all of wuxias values and aesthetic traditions and filters them through his idiosyncratic pace and historical preoccupations. The result is a film that works simultaneously as an ode and as a subversion.
Oh, and cinematography as an art form is pretty much redundant after peaking with these majestically saturated compositions.
