Review of The Assassin (2015) by Kyle B — 21 Dec 2015
It's pretty to look at but following along to the story is a bit of a snore. You would think a movie about an Assassin would be thrilling but anytime they even put a toe in the water for a great action scene it would last maybe 5 seconds and move on to more and more conversations that I really just lost interest in mid way.
The cinematography, especially at the beginning, is really great and beautiful to look at as are the costumes, make up, and the production design/art direction and some nice sound design and well choreographed fight scenes when they do happen but that's about all I can recommend why you should see this movie.
The director won the Cannes Best Director award and out of some of the other Cannes selections I've seen this year so far I can't say that it was really a deserved win though he hints at really interesting things like watching a scene behind a curtain to make it seem like we are spying like this assassin is but you can have as much style as you want but your movie has got to be interesting first and foremost.
