Review of The Assassin (2015) by Steve W — 15 Apr 2016
Hailed as a masterpiece, I'd say this movie is about 70% of one. The movie has immense beauty with its changing of ratios, the gorgeous cinematography and solid performances. But the movie has an unforgiving pace, not too worried about having a cohesive narrative or alienating non-patient film goers.
Some of the silence can mask so many things going on underneath, such as a duel in a forest where no one speaks for about 5-7 minutes even after the battle is over. And the film is not the usual standard swords and wuxia film, but it is an interesting one.
