Review of The Asphalt Jungle (1950) by Eric P — 31 Jul 2007
The Asphalt Jungle might have been the first, but I couldn't stop thinking about the many movies which have come after this and improved on the genre. One needs only to look a few years further to Kubrick's The Killing to find a great example of a heist film. Melville's films also come to mind.
It's not that the Asphalt Jungle is a bad film, per se, but rather that it is now unremarkable. The heist scene is uninteresting and there is no attention paid to the details of the planning or execution. There is one clever element of suspense during the heist, but I won't spoil it. Otherwise, I found that many of the performances were a little flat. Sterling Hayden, in particular, who I normally love, was probably at the worst I've ever seen him. He wasn't bad, he was just uninteresting.
